Describe the problem the battery should solve

You might want to use more daytime solar in the evening, shift grid purchases to a cheaper tariff period or support selected circuits during a power cut. Those are different objectives. State them before comparing battery models.

For a Bushey household, begin with actual electricity use and when the home is occupied. If the solar array rarely produces surplus, a larger battery will not create extra generation. A tariff-led system requires its own cost comparison and suitable controls.

Understand kWh and kW

Usable capacity in kWh describes the energy available from the battery. Output power in kW describes how quickly it can supply that energy. An oven, kettle and other loads operating together may require grid electricity even when a battery still has charge.

Ask for the usable figure, continuous output, warranty terms and expected losses. Compare these with the household’s evening demand. Headline capacity alone is not enough to determine whether storage is a worthwhile addition.

Check the retrofit and installation position

If you already have solar, provide the inverter model, array capacity and handover documents. Ask whether the proposal uses an AC-coupled battery, a hybrid inverter or another arrangement, and how any changes affect existing warranties.

The installer must assess the proposed position against applicable requirements and manufacturer instructions. Access, environmental conditions and the building arrangement matter. Shared spaces or leased property may need additional permissions.

Ask explicitly about backup

A standard grid-connected array normally disconnects during a power cut. A battery only supplies backup if the equipment and wiring have been designed for it. Request a list of supported circuits, the power limit and the switchover arrangement.

Keeping an energy reserve for outages can reduce the capacity used for everyday savings. Ask for that trade-off to be modelled. Your chosen installer should explain operation and isolation at handover; we do not promise whole-home backup from every battery.
